Realism and Character

As you can see from the portraits in my gallery, I hand paints each cat with care and attention to detail, blending realism with a traditional, painterly feel.

Light and shade are key to creating depth and form in my oil portraits, but the real magic lies in the eyes. Every cat’s gaze is different, and I focus intently on capturing that unique look. It’s not just about getting the markings right, it’s about capturing your cat’s personality. From the subtlest tilt of the head to the tiniest shift in expression, it all plays a part in telling their story.

Classic Drawings

I usually works from one main photo for the pose of your cat portrait, with additional photos used to help with detail, markings, or features. To give your portrait the best start, have a look at my photography tips page — it’s full of advice on how to capture your cat at its best.

I recommend setting aside a little quiet time to take several photos of your cat in natural light. Don’t worry if you don’t get the perfect shot straight away — keep snapping over a few days or even weeks. High-quality reference photos really do make all the difference to the finished painting.

Capturing Personality

Every cat is different — and to truly capture yours, I’d love to hear about them. Their habits, their quirks, how they look at you — all these details help bring your portrait to life.

When you tell me about your cat’s character, it guides the entire painting process. It helps me select the right photo, plan the composition, and — most importantly — understand how *you* see your cat. I want the portrait to feel familiar, like looking into their eyes in real life. After all, this is something you’ll treasure for many years to come.
